چکیده

Elongate (m-scale), cylindrical sandstone casts are common in the Upper Triassic Zuni Mountains Formation (basal Chinle Group) in a section near Fort Wingate, west-central New Mexico. Previous authors suggested that these features were formed by the burrowing activity of lungfish. Following abandonment of this hypothesis, it was proposed that the casts are the fossilized burrows of crayfish. We find evidence for this origin (crayfish body fossils and characteristic wall structures) lacking at this site. We propose alternatively that the casts are rhizoliths formed by the deep tap roots of the sphenopsid Neocalamites.

Detrital Zircon Link Between Headwaters and Terminus of the Upper Triassic Chinle-Dockum Paleoriver System

New detrital-zircon geochronologic data reveal that a through-going paleoriver connected Texas with Nevada in Late Triassic time. Sandstone from the Upper Triassic Santa Rosa Sandstone (Dockum Group) from northwestern Texas contains a detrital zircon suite nearly identical to that found in western Nevada in the Upper Triassic Osobb Formation (Auld Lang Syne Group, correlative with the Chinle Fo...

Calcareous paleosols of the Upper Triassic Chinle Group, Four Corners region, southwestern United States: Climatic implications

Paleosols are prominent features of the Upper Triassic Chinle Group. The oldest (Carnian-age) formations of the Chinle Group (Zuni Mountains and Shinarump Formations) contain kaolinitic paleosols that display gley features but generally lack calcretes. Paleosols of the (Upper Carnian) Blue Mesa Member of the Petrifi ed Forest Formation are mostly mature Alfi sols that have distinctive horizonat...
